Residence permit in Hungary for the purpose of work

Persons eligible for a residence permit in Hungary

A residence permit for the purpose of employment is issued to third-country nationals whose purpose of residence is:

  • Performing actual work for or under the direction of another person based on an employment relationship for remuneration

  • As the owner or manager of a company, cooperative or other legal entity established for profit, he/she performs actual work in addition to the activities that fall within the scope of this activity.


The application for a residence permit must be submitted in person, accompanied by documents confirming the conditions of residence. The application must be accompanied by a photo of the person and pay an administrative fee in the amount established by specific legislation. When applying, you must present a valid travel document (passport). The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the expiration of the permitted right of residence.


Documents required when applying for a residence permit based on work:

  • documentary confirmation of the purpose of the stay

  • a preliminary agreement on the establishment of an employment relationship or a document confirming an employment relationship

  • a certified copy of a document confirming the professional qualifications, education, knowledge of languages, experience and other skills of a third-country citizen necessary for the implementation of activities, as well as its certified translation

  • document required to substantiate the said preferential cases

You must attach the required documentary evidence that you are eligible for the above benefits.


  • document confirming the right of residence

  • certified copy of the certificate of ownership, no more than 30 days old

  • lease agreement

  • document confirming the use of housing free of charge

  • Completed declaration of residence form, signed by the accommodation provider


Proof of livelihood

  • Statement of income from the tax authorities (NAV) for the previous year

  • certificate of income or preliminary agreement or employment contract issued by the employer

  • other documents (e.g. bank statement, bank statement)

Proof of Comprehensive Health Insurance
